My dearest brethren in Christ, as the gentle light of this Thursday morning breaks upon the world, so too does the grace of God illuminate our souls, inviting us to a renewed communion with Him. In the quiet sanctity of this early hour, before the day's duties press upon us, let us draw near to the Heart of our Lord, offering Him the firstfruits of our thoughts and affections. For indeed, every morning is a divine invitation to begin anew, to cast off the shadows of yesterday, and to embrace with ardor the glorious possibilities of grace that lie before us.
The Horizon of Hope
The Sacred Scriptures, ever ancient and ever new, speak to us today of a profound and exhilarating truth: the coming of the Lord and the promise of a new heaven and a new earth. Saint Peter, in his second epistle (2 Pet 3:12-15a, 17-18), exhorts us to live in holiness and godliness, "awaiting and hastening the coming of the day of God." This is not a passive waiting, beloved, but an active, fervent longing that transforms our present moments. Our gaze is fixed not merely on the earthly horizon, but on the celestial one, where Christ our King shall return in glory. This sublime hope ought to imbue every action, every prayer, every act of charity with eternal significance. It is this hope that fuels the missionary spirit, compelling us to spread the good news, to prepare the hearts of all for that glorious day, and to build up the Kingdom of God here on earth, one soul, one community, one mission at a time.
The Heart of All Law
Yet, how are we to live in such a way that hastens this divine advent? Our Lord Himself provides the unequivocal answer in today's Gospel (Mark 12:28-34). When asked about the first of all the commandments, Jesus responds with the very essence of our faith: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength… You shall love your neighbor as yourself." These two, inseparable commands form the very cornerstone of Christian life, the beating heart of all our endeavors. They are not merely suggestions, but the foundational principle upon which all holiness, all mission, and all true flourishing rests. To love God supremely, and our neighbor as ourselves, is to fulfill the entire law, and to live a life worthy of the Gospel. Without love, all our striving, all our zeal, even our profoundest knowledge, is but a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal, as Saint Paul reminds us.
"It is not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is done, that makes it agreeable to God."
— St. Francis de Sales
Growth in Grace and Knowledge
To truly love, we must continually strive to know Him whom we love. Saint Peter concludes his epistle by urging us to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." This is the monk's daily task, and indeed, the task of every faithful disciple. Through diligent prayer, profound study of the Sacred Scriptures, and devout reception of the Sacraments, we are transformed. This growth in grace and knowledge is not for our own sake alone, but to better serve God and neighbor. It enables us to discern His will, to speak His truth with charity, and to embody His love more perfectly in a world desperately yearning for it. Every mission supported by Sanctus Mission, every sacred artistry nurtured, contributes to this growth – fostering environments where hearts can be uplifted, minds enlightened, and souls drawn ever closer to the Divine Architect of all beauty and truth.
A Daily Offering of Love
Therefore, beloved, as we step forth into this new day, let us do so with purpose. Let our hearts be inflamed with that ardent love for God that propels us to selfless service for our neighbor. Let every mundane task be transformed into a sacred offering, every encounter an opportunity to reflect Christ's light. Let us grow in grace, seeking Him in every moment, so that we may truly hasten the coming of His Kingdom. May our lives be a living testament to that hope and that love, preparing the way for the Lord.
O Divine Love, inflame our hearts this day with Thy sacred fire. Grant us the grace to love Thee with all our being, and our neighbor as ourselves. May our lives be a testament to Thy coming Kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
