Bearing Witness to the Gospel

Today, as we commemorate Saint Mark the Evangelist in this radiant Eastertide, we are called to reflect on the profound dignity and sacred mandate of spreading the Good News. Like Mark, let us courageously proclaim the Risen Christ, both in word and in the unwavering witness of our lives, empowering mission through our faith and charity.

The Radiant Dawn of Eastertide

As the radiant dawn of this blessed Saturday breaks upon our world, we gather in spirit for our Morning Office, our hearts attuned to the celestial echoes of truth and grace. In this glorious Third Week of Easter, Holy Mother Church directs our gaze towards a most venerable figure: Saint Mark the Evangelist. His feast day shines as a beacon, reminding us of the Risen Christ's enduring command and the profound dignity of bearing His saving message to all corners of creation.

The Courageous Call of the Evangelist

Saint Mark, beloved companion to Peter and Paul, was not merely a scribe but a dynamic witness to the incarnate Word. His Gospel, terse and vibrant, captures the swift, powerful actions of Christ — His miracles, His teachings, His ultimate triumph over death. He is symbolized by the winged lion, an ancient emblem signifying courage, strength, and the royal dignity of Christ, roaring forth the truth of salvation. Mark did not merely write of the Gospel; he lived it, traveling far from the comforts of home to establish the Church in Alexandria, ultimately sealing his testimony with the crimson seal of martyrdom. His life eloquently proclaims that the Good News is not merely to be heard but to be proclaimed with a spirit aflame with holy zeal.

Our Mandate from the Risen Lord

The very air of this Eastertide vibrates with the exultant cries of Alleluia! Christ is Risen! And with this profound truth comes a sacred mandate, echoing the Lord’s own words: “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). This is not a suggestion for a select few, but a divine commission to every baptized soul. Like Saint Mark, we are called to be evangelists, not necessarily by preaching from pulpits across distant lands, but by living lives that unmistakably bear witness to the Risen Christ. Our faithfulness, our charity, our unwavering hope amidst trials — these are our Gospels written anew for the world to read. Let us reflect upon the profound truth articulated by the Angelic Doctor:

“The office of a preacher is a very noble one, for it pertains to the very greatest thing which man can do, namely, to preach the Gospel of Christ.” — St. Thomas Aquinas

Indeed, every act of Christian charity, every word of encouragement, every prayer offered for the lost, is a form of preaching. It is an echo of the Risen Voice, a participation in the mission that began with Christ and was carried forth by the Apostles and saints like Mark.

Living the Mission in Our Daily Walk

How, then, do we emulate the bold spirit of Saint Mark in this present age? We begin by deepening our own encounter with the Risen Lord, allowing His grace to transform us. We cultivate hearts receptive to the Holy Spirit, who alone can empower us to speak and act with divine authority. For many, this will mean supporting the tireless efforts of missionaries and artisans who, like Sanctus Mission's beneficiaries, dedicate their lives to spreading the Gospel in tangible ways — through building churches, providing education, or crafting sacred art that elevates the soul to God. For all of us, it means striving for holiness in our families, workplaces, and communities, letting our lives be a living testament to the truth, beauty, and goodness of our Catholic faith. It is in allowing Christ to shine through us that we truly fulfill our evangelical call.

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, let the commemoration of Saint Mark enflame within us a renewed ardor for the Gospel. Let us not fear to bear witness, for the Risen Lord is with us always, even to the consummation of the age. May our lives, imbued with faith and fervent charity, serve as ever-new chapters in the unfolding narrative of salvation, bringing countless souls to the font of all grace.

O Glorious Saint Mark, true Evangelist of Christ, intercede for us that we may always be zealous in proclaiming the Good News. Strengthen our resolve, O Lord, to follow Thy commission, and fill us with the Holy Spirit, that our lives may ever bear witness to Thy Risen glory, for the salvation of souls and the triumph of Thy Holy Church. Amen.
