Hearts Ablaze for the Risen Lord

This morning, as the new day dawns within the Octave of Easter, we reflect on the transformative encounter on the Road to Emmaus. Let us open our hearts to recognize the Risen Christ in the Scriptures and in the breaking of the Bread, allowing His divine presence to ignite our zeal for mission.

The Dawn of Understanding

Dearest brothers and sisters in Christ, as the sun ascends this blessed Wednesday within the hallowed Octave of Easter, our hearts are called to turn once more to the radiant dawn of the Resurrection. We are still basking in the glorious light of Christ's triumph over death, a truth that echoes through the very fabric of our being, promising eternal life and unending hope. Today, let us ponder a profound journey, one taken by two disciples on the road to Emmaus, whose sorrow was transformed into an incandescent joy by the unexpected presence of the Risen Lord.

Their steps were heavy, their spirits downcast, for the hope they had placed in Jesus of Nazareth seemed utterly extinguished. How often do we, too, walk with heavy hearts, burdened by the anxieties of this world, perhaps even feeling distant from the divine consolation we yearn for? Yet, it is precisely in these moments of perceived absence that Christ often draws nearest, walking beside us, ready to reveal Himself anew.

The Illumination of the Sacred Word

As the unrecognized Christ joined their journey, He did not immediately reveal His identity. Instead, with divine patience and wisdom, He began to unfold the sacred Scriptures, explaining how all that had been written concerning Him in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled. Oh, what a profound lesson for us! It is through the diligent and prayerful study of God's Holy Word that our understanding is illuminated, and our hearts begin to burn with an interior fire of recognition and love.

The Word of God is not a dead letter but a living voice, speaking to us across the millennia, revealing the salvific plan of the Father. When we approach it with humility and faith, allowing the Holy Spirit to be our guide, the Risen Christ Himself speaks to us, just as He did to those disciples. The Scriptures are the lamp unto our feet, dispelling the shadows of doubt and leading us ever closer to the Heart of God.

Recognized in the Breaking of Bread

It was only as evening drew near, and they prevailed upon Him to stay, that the true miracle occurred. As He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. In that singular act, the very mystery of our salvation was re-enacted before them. This, my friends, is the perpetual miracle of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacred Banquet where the Risen Lord truly and substantially makes Himself present to us.

Just as the disciples’ hearts burned within them while He expounded the Scriptures, so too are our souls inflamed when we receive Him in Holy Communion. It is the summit and source of our Christian life, the pledge of eternal glory, and the very nourishment for our earthly pilgrimage. As the great Doctor of the Church, Saint Augustine, so eloquently taught us:

“What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that the bread is the Body of Christ and the chalice is the Blood of Christ.”

May our faith ever be thus, keen to perceive the Real Presence, even when our senses may not fully grasp the divine mystery.

Hearts Ablaze for Mission

No sooner had they recognized Him than He vanished from their sight. Yet, He did not truly leave them, for His Spirit remained, transforming their sorrow into an unstoppable zeal. They rose immediately, returning that very hour to Jerusalem, to proclaim the joyous news: "The Lord has truly risen!"

This, beloved faithful, is our call during this Eastertide and indeed, throughout our lives. Having encountered the Risen Christ in the Word and the Sacrament, our hearts, too, must burn with an ardent desire to share this Good News. We are called to be witnesses, to carry the light of His Resurrection into every corner of the world, just as the disciples hastened back to Jerusalem. Let our lives be a testament to His victory, our actions a reflection of His love, and our words a hymn of His praise.

May the grace of this morning's reflection empower us to walk courageously on our own Emmaus roads, always vigilant for the presence of Christ, ever nourished by His Word and His Body, and perpetually inflamed with a missionary spirit for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

O Risen Lord, open our eyes to see You, our ears to hear You, and our hearts to love You. Ignite within us the fire of Your Holy Spirit, that we may carry Your light and Your peace to all whom we encounter this day. Amen.
